What is NuvaRing?

FDA approved for use in the United States in October 2001, NuvaRing is a low-dose hormonal contraceptive device that users insert into the vagina once a month to prevent unwanted pregnancies.  NuvaRing works by releasing two synthetic hormones—ethinyl estradiol (a form of estrogen) and etonogestral (a synthetic progestin)—into the system to prevent ovulation and minimize sperm penetration.  Etonogestrel is an active metabolite of desogestrel, a “third generation” progestin that helps to prevent acne, breakthrough bleeding or spotting, and weight gain.  Recent studies show that desogestrel substantially increases the likelihood of a type of potentially fatal blood clots known as venous thromboembolism.  In fact, in 2007 the well-known and trusted consumer advocacy group Public Citizen requested an FDA ban on oral contraceptives that contain desogestral because the risk of blood clots, strokes, and cardiovascular problems is so heightened in patients who receive this type of birth control.

The risk of birth control side effects is higher with NuvaRing than with daily pills because this device releases hormones directly into the bloodstream, whereas pills are gradually digested before hormones release into the body.

NuvaRing Side Effects and Injuries

Any medication comes with the risk of side effects, and common NuvaRing side effects include yeast infections, weight gain, headaches, and nausea.  In addition to these minor side effects, NuvaRing also carries the potential for serious and potentially deadly side effects such as:

  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Blood clots
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack
  • Deep vein thrombosis

The above NuvaRing side effects can result in a lack of oxygen, severe and permanent damage to internal organs, amputation, and even sudden death.  Since its release in 2001, NuvaRing has been linked to more than 300 formal reports of serious injury or health problems.

FDA NuvaRing Warnings

NuvaRing was approved by the FDA for use in the United States in October 2001, and the regulatory agency required heightened warnings to be provided with the device in 2005 and also in 2008.  NuvaRing warnings for physicians and for patients  who use the device state that blood clots and other potentially serious or deadly NuvaRing side effects are more of a danger for women who have a history of hypertension, heart disease, blood clots.  Women who use NuvaRing and who experience irregular bleeding or who take other medications that may negatively interact with NuvaRing should also be especially aware of potential side effects so that they can spot any danger signs early.

NuvaRing Lawsuits

Hundreds of women have filed NuvaRing lawsuits after suffering debilitating side effects or even the wrongful death of a loved one after using this contraceptive vaginal ring.  In 2012, there are nearly 1,000 NuvaRing lawsuits active in the United States.  Recently, all federal NuvaRing lawsuits were consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL) centralized in the Eastern District of Missouri.  In these medical product liability lawsuits, plaintiffs allege that NuvaRing makers, Merck subsidiaries Organon, Shering Plough, and Akzo Nobel NV, displayed negligence by failing to provide adequate information about NuvaRing risks, side effects, and injuries to physicians, patients, and drug regulators.  Plaintiffs also claim that Organon and Merck did not test NuvaRing thoroughly before putting it on the market.

Compensation awarded in a dangerous medical device lawsuit can help ease emotional stress by helping victims recover money for damages such as medical bills, pharmaceutical and rehabilitation costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering.  If you have suffered injury after using NuvaRing, you, too may be owed compensation.
