What is Trasylol?
Aprotinin is a drug sold by Bayer under the brand name Trasylol. Trasylol is a heavily marketed drug used to control bleeding in patients undergoing heart bypass surgery.
Studies indicate Trasylol doubles a patient's risk of kidney failure, and increase the risk of heart attack, stroke and congestive heart failure during coronary artery bypass grafts. In February 2006, the FDA issued a public health advisory warning heart bypass surgeons, and their patients, about the dangerous side effects of a Trasylol injection.
In recent Trasylol studies, about half the patients received the more expensive drug Trasylol while the other half received one of the cheaper, safer generic alternatives. The cost per dose of Trasylol is $1,400. The generic drug Amicar is $11 per dose and the generic drug Cyklokapron is $44 per dose. These Trasylol studies suggest the patients who received the more expensive drug Trasylol were at an increased risk for death as a result of kidney failure (doubled risk), heart attack, congestive heart failure and stroke.
Trasylol Side Effects
Bayer's own Trasylol studies linked the drug Trasylol to deadly side effects, particularly the significant increase is a patient's risk of kidney failure due to a Trasylol injection. Sadly, Bayer was aware of the dangerous increase in deadly risks when the FDA advisory board committee convened to discuss the safety of Trasylol, yet Bayer failed to mention the Trasylol study's existence or it's results.
Trasylol is administered intravenously during coronary artery bypass surgery after the patient is under anesthesia, therefore most patients are unaware they have received this dangerous drug. A patient who has undergone heart surgery and experiencing side effects should request their medical records immediately to find out if they were given a Trasylol injection.
