Chantix Heart Problems

In June 2011, information from a clinical trial involving 700 smokers suggested a potential association between Chantix and an increased risk of heart attacks and other heart problems.  In this trial, Chantix users had a higher incidence of heart attacks and other heart problems than subjects who did not take Chantix.

In the trial, smokers with cardiovascular disease who took Chantix were more than twice as likely to have a heart attack as subjects given a placebo.  In addition to Chantix heart attacks, a number of other heart problems were linked to Chantix, such as:

  • Angina pectoris
  • Coronary revascularization
  • Peripheral vascular disease

As a result of this clinical trial, the FDA required new warnings to be added to Chantix labels and medication guides to alert patients to the potential risk of Chantix heart attacks.  The FDA also required Pfizer to further review information from a prior clinical trial and to report on the risk of Chantix heart attacks.

Concerns about the risk of Chantix heart attacks were first raised by the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices.  The group found roughly 224 reports of Chantix heart problems in FDA reports from the first months Chantix was available to the public, May 2006 to December 2007.  Included in this report were incidences of heart arrhythmia, heart attacks, and other heart problems linked to Chantix.
